Causes of Hip Pain
- Hip pain can result from arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), injuries (fractures, labral tears), bursitis, or muscle strain. Other causes include avascular necrosis, hip impingement, infections, and referred pain from the spine.
Common Causes
- Hip osteoarthritis – Degenerative joint disease leading to cartilage wear and stiffness
- Trochanteric bursitis – Inflammation of the bursa near the hip joint
- Avascular necrosis (AVN) – Reduced blood supply to the femoral head, causing bone death.
- Muscle and tendon tears: Includes adductor strains, hamstring injuries, hip flexor tears, and gluteus muscle injuries.
- Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS): Inflammation of the IT band causing outer hip pain.
- Septic arthritis: A joint infection leading to severe hip pain and swelling.
MRI is the best imaging modality for the hip because it provides highly detailed, non-invasive visualization of soft tissues, cartilage, and bone structures, helping in precise diagnosis of joint abnormalities.
Conditions Diagnosed Via MRI:
- Trochanteric bursitis
- Hip osteoarthritis
- Avascular necrosis
- Muscle and tendon tears
- Iliotibial band syndrome
Other Imaging Methods Include:
- Radiograph ( X-rays ) iIt helps us in identifying the bony pathologies like bones alignment issues, fractures or tumors etc.
- CT - This provides us the detailed images of bones and joints, enabling precise diagnosis and treatment planning. They help detect fractures, bone tumors, and joint disorders, enhancing patient care and outcomes.
- 3D CT - Helps us in identifying the exact fracture lines , fragments orientation and planning of exact surgeries
- High Resolutions Ultrasound (HRUSG) to identify trigger points, muscle tears, ligament tears.
Minimally Invasive Treatments
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
- Growth factor concentrates (GFC) therapy
- Fluid aspiration
- Steroid injections
- BMAC therapy
- Radiofrequency ablation
Surgeries
- Total hip replacement
- Partial Hip Replacement, Hip Resurfacing
- Core decompression surgery with BMAC
- Trauma hip
- Synovectomy hip pinning
- Hip revision surgeries
